New sod care: the first 21 days in a Triangle yard
The install is only day one. Use this simple watering and mowing rhythm to help fresh sod root instead of lifting at the seams.
Fresh sod needs consistent moisture while roots move into the prepared soil. On day one, water deeply enough to wet the soil below the sod, then check corners and edges by lifting a small piece. They dry first.
For roughly the first 7–10 days, water often enough to keep the soil damp but not puddled. A hot, sunny Raleigh week may mean short morning and afternoon cycles. Clay holds water, so adjust by feel instead of following a timer blindly.
Once the sod resists a gentle tug, taper the frequency and water longer. That encourages deeper roots. Keep foot traffic light, secure pets, and do not park equipment on the new lawn while seams are settling.
Mow when the grass is rooted and tall enough for a light cut—never remove more than one-third of the blade. Use a sharp mower and avoid turning hard on wet clay. A little patience in the first three weeks prevents a lot of patching later.
