Fescue, Bermuda, or Zoysia: sod that survives Raleigh
Pick the grass for light and how you live, not the pallet that was on sale.
Tall fescue is the default in much of Raleigh because it stays greener in winter and handles shade from pines and the north side of the house. It wants a higher cut and more water in August. If the yard is a full-sun rectangle, fescue can thin every summer.
Bermuda loves sun and heat and recovers from kids and dogs. It goes straw-colored in winter. Zoysia is slower, denser, and a middle path on sun if you can wait on establishment. Neither one is happy under a heavy tree canopy.
Sod success is mostly prep. We strip or kill the old stand, correct low spots, and roll seams so they do not open when the clay shrinks. The first two weeks are watering: keep it evenly moist, then taper. Walking it too soon leaves dips you will see all year.
If the yard ponds, sod is the last step. A wet clay bowl will kill an expensive pallet. Fix grade and drainage, then choose the grass that matches the light you actually have at 2 p.m. in July.
